UUP leads Assembly runners

The first elections for the new Northern Ireland Assembly will be held on June 25

Almost 300 candidates will contest the elections for the new Northern Ireland Assembly later this month.

The Ulster Unionist Party will lead the pack with 48 runners across the province, it was revealed after nominations closed on Wednesday night.

A total of 292 candidates will vie for the 108 seats in the new assembly, established by the Good Friday Agreement. Forty-eight of the runners are women.

The nationalist SDLP is fielding 38 candidates; Sinn Fein 37; the Democratic Unionist Party 34 and the Alliance Party 22.

Smaller parties

Other parties with more than one candidate are: the Natural Law Party with 16; United Kingdom Unionist 13; Progressive Unionist Party 12; Labour 10 and Ulster Democratic Party nine and Worker's Party, both with nine.

The Northern Ireland Women's Coalition, which was represented in the Stormont talks process, eight; Conservative six; Green three; Independent three; Socialist Party three and Ulster Independence two.

Five candidates will call themselves simply "unionist."

Voting, due to take place on June 25, will be divided into 18 constituencies, with six members elected to each under a proportional representation system.
