The United States has cancelled a planned diplomatic mission to Nigeria aimed at promoting the transition to democracy and civilian government.

The delegation was to have set off in two weeks' time, but a State Department spokesman said the Nigerian authorities had put up preconditions to the visit that were unacceptable.

These included a demand for the lifting of visa restrictions imposed by Washington on senior officials of Nigeria's military government.
