Wednesday, June 3, 1998 Published at 22:52 GMT 23:52 UK World: Americas Raid on pro-Zapatista village in Chiapas Security forces in the Mexican state of Chiapas have stormed a village run by supporters of left-wing Zapatista rebels, and arrested more than one-hundred-and-forty people. Troops and police clashed with villagers armed with sticks and stones who tried to stop them entering the community of Nicolas Ruiz. State officials said the raid followed complaints that Zapatista sympathisers had hounded dozens of government supporters from the village. There's been unrest in Chiapas since an uprising by the Zapatista rebels in 1994 and security forces have raided a number of villages in a campaign against the rebels in recent months.
