Wednesday, June 3, 1998 Published at 17:37 GMT 18:37 UK World: S/W Asia Bangladesh considers defence in light of 'arms race' in region The Bangladeshi Prime Minister, Sheikh Hasina, has said the country may need to change its defence strategy in the wake of what she called the arms race in the region. Speaking to army officers Sheikh Hasina criticised the recent nuclear tests carried out by India and Pakistan, saying there was no justification for them when the world was trying to promote peace. The United States has for some time been in discussion with the Bangladeshi government over military co-operation, The Bangladeshi government has so far not agreed to the American request, but analysts say it may now reconsider its position.
