Speaking in El Salvador at a meeting on public security, the bank's president, Enrique Iglesias, said violence was one of the main obstacles to development. He said it was a serious threat to good quality of life, productivity and investment. Bank experts estimate that violence costs Latin America fifteen-million dollars a year.
