EU demands end to Burundi sanctions

The European Union envoy to the Great Lakes region has said sanctions against Burundi should be lifted, once peace negotiations between the country's warring parties begin in two weeks' time.

The envoy, Aldo Ajello, said this was in line with a decision taken by regional heads of state at a summit in Kampala in February.

The economic embargo was imposed by Burundi's neighbours after a military coup two years ago.
