Sport: Football War on World Cup drug trade Customs officers are using the tournament to push anti-drugs campaign
British footballers have teamed up with customs officers in a bid to halt an increase in the quantity of drugs being smuggled across the Channel during the World Cup.
England captain Alan Shearer and defender Sol Campbell appear in a video produced by the Football Association and customs officials, warning fans to be vigilant. In a similar video produced by the Scottish FA, Scotland's Colin Hendry tells supporters not to get involved with drug traffickers.
Campbell: warns fans
With fans using airports, trains and ferries to travel to and from France, customs officers are using the tournament to push their anti-drugs campaign.
Customs and Excise officer Ron Barrie said: "It is important to take advantage of the World Cup and the travelling fans going there, that we make people aware that they must not leave baggage unattended when they are out of the country."
Nigel Knott from HM Customs at Dover says big events often lead to extra activity by smugglers. "We have had experience of this, particularly in the build-up to the Princess of Wales' funeral. We in Dover seized about £28m worth of drugs in that build-up."
Hendry: backing campaign
Mr Knott added: "Clearly people were thinking that we were not going to be on guard and fortunately we were able to prove them wrong."
Shearer tells fans travelling to France for the World Cup to "support customs in their fight against drugs" and Campbell advises supporters to call the customs hotline if they see "anything suspicious".
