The numbers game

The "spine" of Hoddle's side are included in the 11

England coach Glenn Hoddle has announced his squad numbers - and if he is keeping to history it is a key indicator of his starting line-up.

At Euro 96, only one of the players listed one to 11 did not make Terry Venables' first-choice team - David Platt, number seven, who gave way to Steve McManaman (17).

All of the players Hoddle sees as the "spine" of his side are numbered in the 11 - David Seaman, Paul Ince, Tony Adams and captain Alan Shearer.

Also included are David Batty, David Beckham and Sol Campbell - as well as McManaman, who gets the number 11 shirt.

Manchester United's Teddy Sheringham is listed at number 10 with Liverpool's Michael Owen - his rival for the job of partnering Shearer in attack - number 20.
