Chinese president rules out nuclear tests

The Chinese president, Jiang Zemin, has ruled out a resumption of nuclear testing by Beijing in response to recent tests carried out by neighbouring India and Pakistan.

Mr Jiang, in an interview with the French news agency, said India was fully responsible for current tensions in South Asia, and accused Delhi of targetting China with its nuclear tests.

Beijing staged its last nuclear test in 1996 shortly before signing the Comprehensive Test Ban Treaty.
