Iraq briefs UN Security Council

Iraq has told the United Nations Security Council that it has no more weapons of mass destruction and that it's time for sanctions to be lifted.

In an informal meeting with Council members, an Iraqi delegation headed by the foreign minister Mohammed Said al-Sahaf said it had no more information to give the UN.

But the American and British ambassadors said they weren't convinced by Iraq's arguments, and the chief UN weapons inspector, Richard Butler, is expected to tell the Security Council later today that Iraq still isn't telling the full story about its weapons programmes.

He's also expected to indicate what Baghdad needs to do to bring weapons inspections to an end.

The BBC United Nations correspondent says it's all part of the continuing struggle between Iraq and the UN weapons inspectors in their battle for support in the Security Council.
