The United States Commerce Department has recommended the imposition of a tariff of almost eleven percent on salmon imports from Chile.

The department said it supported claims by American farmers that Chilean companies were competing unfairly by dumping salmon on the United States market.

But it said it only found evidence of minimal Chilean subsidies for the industry.

The recommendation needs the backing of the independent International Trade Commission if it is to be implemented.
