Hingis proved she is streets ahead of the pack by destroying eighth seed Williams 6-3 6-4.

Devenport and Hingis joined Spanish fourth seed Arantxa Sanchez Vicario, who earlier booked her semifinal spot by felling in-form Swiss Patty Schnyder 6-2 6-7 6-0.

In the final four on Thursday, Hingis will meet the winner of the match later on Tuesday between Jana Novotna and Monica Seles. Davenport faces Sanchez Vicario.

Arantxa Sanchez Vicario: has criticised some of the younger players
Arantxa Sanchez Vicario has reached the semi-finals for the eighth time.

Sanchez Vicario, who claimed that Serena Williams had shown an arrogant disregard to her during their marathon fourth-round tie, sent another youngster packing when she beat Patty Schnyder of Switzerland in front of a packed crowd on the Suzanne Lenglen court.

After her victory, the Spaniard vowed that she could reign again at the French Open, which she won in both 1989 and 1994.

In the men's event another Spaniard, 15th seed Felix Mantilla, also made it into the last four by beating 1995 champion Thomas Muster 6-4 6-2 4-6 6-3.
