Pope John Paul has named the new head of his elite Swiss Guard to succeed the man who was murdered last month only ten hours after his appointment.

His replacement is Colonel Pius Segmueller who will be sworn in later this month.

The previous chief, Alois Estermann, and his wife were shot dead in what the Vatican called a moment of madness by a young guardsman who then killed himself.
