Gazza was 'drunk' then dropped

Gazza will need more than a bandage to repair the damage this time

The BBC's Mike Ingham has followed the latest events (2'47")
The England midfielder Paul Gascoigne has admitted in a tabloid newspaper that he was drunk the night before Glenn Hoddle axed him from the World Cup squad.

The player admitted in The Sun Newspaper that he was drunk on Saturday night, having joined other squad members for a drinks and karaoke session at a bar in their hotel.

Gascoigne admitted that he'd had one too many: "Yes I was drunk. I got drunk quite quickly - I'd not had a drink in nine days."

The Sun's Deputy Editor Rebekah Wade who interviewed Gascoigne
He later left the bar in La Manga, Spain, and had sandwiches in his room with team-mate David Seaman, then "crashed out".

But the player felt that he had done nothing wrong as manager Glenn Hoddle encouraged the squad to enjoy themselves. He said he also drank cans of lager as he played golf with his team-mates on Sunday afternoon, and it was after he finished his round that Hoddle delivered his killer blow.

Gascoigne revealed that he exploded in rage after hearing the manager's decision: "I completely lost it. I went mad, berserk. I lost my rag big time. I was shouting and swearing. I couldn't believe the injustice of it.

"I was swearing. Everything came out. I let go of all the emotion building up inside me, I was so hurt."

The Sun's Editor Stuart Higgins: "He is very very depressed" (52")
Team mates Paul Ince and David Seaman led him back to his bedroom.

"I gashed my knee as I kicked the door, I was crying and out of control. I didn't want to talk to anybody and I didn't want to listen to what Glenn had to say. There is nothing he could say."

And he admitted that he hadn't been able to sleep since he got the news from Hoddle: "I wanted to be part of England's World Cup glory but he has destroyed my biggest dream."
