Azeri court sentences twenty people for involvment in failed coup

The Supreme Court in Azerbaijan is reported to have sentenced twenty people to prison terms ranging from one to fifteen years for their involvement in an attempted coup in 1995.

The Interfax news agency says those convicted include Anvar Gafarly, a former prime ministerial spokesman who received an eight year term, and Rasim Agayev, previously a spokesman for the former president, Ayaz Mutalibov who was given four years.

Correspondents say that since 1995 over two-hundred people have been convicted for allegedly participating in the failed coup.
