Gazza front to back and inside out

Gazza's off-pitch antics were an own-goal, the press say

Reaction to the news that Paul Gascoigne will not be part of England's World Cup team is front and back page news in Britain's newspapers.

Pictures of the dropped 31-year-old adorned nearly every front page on Tuesday.

The England star went "beserk" at Hoddle's news
Gazza's reaction to Glenn Hoddle's decision was summed up by The Sun's headline: "I went berserk."

The England star described Hoddle's decision as "the biggest shock I'd ever had."

Back in Britain, Gazza's dad John received the news when his son telephoned him from the England training camp in La Manga, Spain.

He told him: "Cancel your holiday to France."

'Consumed by jealousy'

A sports psychologist warned that Gazza could be the loneliest man in Britain during the tournament.

Tony Banks praises Hoddle's ruthless decision
Hoddle has defended the controversial decision to drop Gazza by saying the star has too many mental and physical problems.

According to The Mirror, the Middlesbrough star is "consumed by jealousy" over his estranged wife Sheryl's new love.

Sheryl, the mother of Gascoigne's son Regan, is reportedly having a relationship with a 26-year-old forklift truck driver from the West Midlands.

'Don't self-destruct' - Best

The Mirror, which last month printed a photograph of the footballer feasting on a kebab, also published advice from footballing legend George Best.

He said: "Paul, don't press the self-destruct button like I did ...you'll regret it."

Chris Evans: celebrities warned to stay clear
The paper also printed a picture of Gazza's pal DJ Chris Evans, warning celebrities to steer clear of as he could seriously damage their careers.

As well as the kebab incident with Gazza, Evans was recently seen lunching with ex-Spice Girl Geri Halliwell.

The Daily Telegraph, in an editorial leader, says Gazza has only himself to blame for the "drink, cigarettes and kebabs" although it claims he was egged on by Evans.

Chris Evans speculates on how his friend must be feeling
Danny Baker, another drinking pal of Gazza's, writing in The Times describes Hoddle's decision as "punishment" while defending the star's nights out.

But, in a leader column, The Guardian defended the coach's decision as "the only thing he could do after showing quite extraordinary patience with the wayward talent under his guardianship."
