Gebrselassie reclaims record

Gebrselassie left no doubts who was number 1

The Ethiopian athlete Haile Gebrselassie has reclaimed the world 10,000m record.

Running in the Netherlands, he finished in just over 26.22 - knocking more than five seconds off the previous record, set by the Kenyan Paul Tergat last year.

Gebrselassie - the reigning Olympic and world champion - warned afterwards he plans to put the record in an even safer place soon.

The reigning champion insisted he was not fast enough
"I am not 100% satisfied," he said. "I wanted to run 26.20 or maybe 26.15. I know I can and I will.

"I woke up in the last kilometre," he added. "I did not realise I was not going fast enough but then I saw the time and I pushed a little harder."

Gebrselassie first broke the 10,000m record in 1995.

After improving the 10,000m and 5,000m records last season, he lost them both on one night last year in Brussels - Tergat claimed the 10,000m record and his arch-rival Daniel Komen of Kenya took the 5,000m mark.

"I lost everything and there was nothing I could do. Since then, I've been wanting to get those records back," said a smiling Gebrselassie after recapturing the 10,000 record at the Adriaan Paulen Memorial Grand Prix II meeting.
