Dr Liam Fox was the first of William Hague's new appointments, in his reshuffle of June 1998, to be younger than the Tory leader himself (by six months).

Promoted to the shadow cabinet as spokesman on constitutional affairs, after deputising in that role to Michael Ancram.

Prevously PPS to Michael Howard as home secretary, a government whip and a junior Foreign Office minister for a year before the election.Once spotted with a "Stuff the EU" sticker on his car.

A General Practitioner, born and educated in Scotland, good-looking and presentable. Was a houseman and registrar in several Scottish hospitals.

He has won prizes for his debating skills. President of Conservative students at Glasgow University.

Was a Thatcherite disciple who was a convinced unionist (he opposed devolution) and Euro-sceptic. A supporter of Michael Howard for leader.

Goes clubbing now and then with attractive women, including a soap star from "Neighbours".

He has studied American political techniques.
