UK Politics: Talking Politics

Sir George Young - political sketch

Sir George Young is an extremely tall, highly engaging "wet", meaning he is on the left of the Conservative Party.

An Old Etonian baronet, who shifted seats after 23 years from Ealing to safe Hampshire.

A liberal reformer and highly experienced minister who served through most of the 18 years of Tory power.

He was at the Health and Environment ministries until sacked by Mrs Thatcher, and was later promoted by John Major via the Treasury to become Transport Secretary.

Shadowed defence in William Hague's first shadow cabinet (main problems: Bosnia, Iraq, and the Strategic Defence Review). But he was moved after a year, to be Shadow Leader of the House - whre his emollient skills could be an advantage.

Strong on housing (he found ways of helping homeless rough sleepers), the disabled, and health education.

Opposed the poll tax and helped Michael Heseltine bring in its replacement, the "council tax". He served on Lambeth Council with John Major and developed concern for inner city race relations.

He has a diffident manner and is amusing. He often cycles to work.
