South African agent jailed for apartheid crimes

incorporates S Africa Agent, Botha in Court A former South African military intelligence agent has been convicted on twenty-five charges, including the murder of a leading anti-apartheid activist in 1989.

Former friends of the agent, Ferdi Barnard, told the High Court in Pretoria that he'd boasted of the murder of the activist, David Webster. He is expected to be sentenced later this week.

The conviction came as the former South African president, P.W. Botha, returned to court in the the coastal town of George to answer charges over his refusal to appear before the Truth and Reconciliation Commission.

The Commission wants to question Mr Botha over allegations he had a role in ordering political assassinations during the 1980s.

But he has repeatedly said he has nothing to apologise for.
