Indonesian corruption probe to investigate Suharto wealth

The new Indonesian government says it's to launch an inquiry into corruption under the regime of former President Suharto.

The attorney-general, Sudjono Atmonegoro said it would not specifically target the former president, but members of the Suharto family had given assurances they would not leave the country while the inquiry was in progress.

The BBC Jakarta Correspondent says the investigation will not be as hard-hitting as the opposition had demanded into the fortune amassed by the Suhartos -- estimated to be about forty-billion dollars.

But he says it does seem to be an acknowledgement of the public concern over some of the worst excesses of the Suharto era.
