The Virgin Radio boss, who regularly enjoys nights out with the soccer star, called for listeners to send in messages of support. He said Gazza "would need a lot of looking after" in the next few weeks and urged fans "not to be angry" about coach Glenn Hoddle's decision.
Steven Spielberg has persuaded 25 celebrities to read chapters of a fairy tale for a CD which will be sold to benefit his children's charity. Madonna, Harrison Ford and Robin Williams are among those who are to read excerpts from The Emperor's New Clothes for the Starlight Foundation. Others include John Lithgow, who plays the emperor, and Jay Leno, who narrates. Designer Calvin Klein is to play the emperor's underwear.
The official England World Cup anthem On Top Of The World by England United is finally released today. But it will come up against some stiff opposition. A revamped version of Three Lions released next Monday is among the songs which England United will face in the charts. Also released on June 8 is "Vindaloo", by the impromptu band Fat Les, featuring artist Damien Hirst, Blur's Alex James and actor Keith Allen.
Titanic chalked up yet another honour when it was named best movie at the eighth annual MTV Movie Awards. Its star Leonardo DiCaprio won Best Male Performance, although he wasn't there to pick up the award. Neve Campbell won Best Female Performance for her role in Scream 2. Chamberlain in TV tribute to Thorn Birds Richard Chamberlain has agreed to take part in a televised tribute to The Thorn Birds on the mini-series' 15th anniversary next month. Chamberlain, who co-starred with Rachel Ward, admits he was not enthusiastic about the sequel to the original series "I didn't think there should be a sequel but they made me an offer I couldn't refuse and I had to simply think of it as an entirely new show." Witches of Eastwick may become musical Theatre impresario Sir Cameron Mackintosh is reportedly interested in turning the film The Witches of Eastwick into a Broadway musical. Mackintosh, who produced the Broadway hits Cats, Miss Saigon and Phantom of the Opera, is said by Variety newspaper to be in talks with Warner Brothers. Warner is the studio that produced the 1987 hit film that starred Jack Nicholson, Cher, Michelle Pfeiffer and Susan Sarandon. |
