The FTSE 100 suffered a 70 point slump within the first half hour of trade as sellers reacted to the Dow's late reversal on Friday and fresh losses in Asia, where the Nikkei dropped 2.23% and the Hang Seng fell 3.45%.
Volume, however, remained extremely thin.
