Presidents of Peru and Ecuador in Brasilia discuss border dispute

The presidents of Peru and Ecuador, Alberto Fujimori and Fabian Alarcon, have agreed to continue talks on a lasting peace between their two countries.

The two men, who were meeting in the Brazilian capital, reaffirmed their commitment to signing a treaty.

But correspondents say there still seem to be clear differences between the two sides, who missed a deadline at the end of May for concluding the accord.

Brazil is one of four nations along with the United states, Argentina and Chileacting as guarantors of peace between Peru and Ecuador, who clashed in early 1995 over a region of Amazon forest claimed by both countries.
