Japan coalition split

Japan's Social Democratic party has ended its four year old alliance with the ruling coalition led by the Liberal Democratic party.

The split came as little surprise after frequent disputes over key issues such as defence and anti-corruption measures.

The smaller New Party Sakigake has also withdrawn its support for the coalition.

Analysts say the split was expected and will have no immediate effect on the government, which still commands a majority in the lower house of Parliament.
