Republican Guards in Niger have freed the regional administrator in Agadez after briefly taking him hostage.

Their action was part of a mutiny in several parts of the country over unpaid wages.

Officials are also reported to have been abducted in Filingue.

Earlier, a Republican Guard officer in the capital, Niamey, was released after being detained by some of his own men.
