Tornado rips through small US town

The tornado left six dead

A tornado which struck without warning has wiped out a small town in the American state of South Dakota.

Six people were killed and another 150 injured when a freak whirlwind struck the small town of Spencer, 50 miles (80km) west of the Sioux Falls.

The town, which has a population of around 300, has been left devasated by the tornado which uprooted everything in its path. Around two-dozen houses survived.

The storm hit at 8.45pm local time (1345 GMT) on Saturday.

Residents, who were forced to hide in the basements of their homes, say there were no warning sirens.

Survivors who have lost their homes were taken to a National Guard armory at a nearby town where tents were set up.

The tornado was part of a swarm of thunderstorms that battered the upper Midwest on Saturday night with winds gusting to more than 100 mph (160 kph).

Two deaths were blamed on the storms when trees falling on houses during the night killed one person in Wisconsin and one in Michigan.
