Top seed smashes opponent

Hingis goes through to the next round of the competition

Martina Hingis and Venus Williams have powered their way to a quarter-final match-up, each routing their opponents in straight sets.

Hingis, the top seed, defeated Anna Smashnova of Israel 6-1, 6-2 in a match that took just over an hour.

She admitted afterwards: "It wasn't as easy as I thought it was going to be."

Williams reached the quarters with a 6-1, 6-3 victory over Henrieta Nagyova of Slovakia.

She slammed seven aces during the match; her opponent had none.

Her fellow American, Lindsay Davenport, the No. 2 seed, had a bit more trouble, but advanced with a 6-3, 4-6, 6-2 victory over Sandrine Testud of France.
