Huddersfield win at last

Huddersfield 28 Warrington 6

It has taken Huddersfield eight matches but the club has finally gained its first Super League victory of the season.

A tremendous 28-6 win over out-of-sorts Warrington at the McAlpine Stadium gave man-of-the-match Danny Russell his finest hour in the top flight, although the Australian was pushed all the way for the sponsors' award by young Steve Booth.

The 21-year-old scrum-half also had a majestic game which was capped by a breathtaking try in first-half stoppage time.

Booth chased his own kick to score gleefully under the posts after beating three Warrington men in a 20-metre dash to glory.

That gave Huddersfield a 16-6 interval lead as Garry Schofield's men recovered after falling behind to Jon Roper's early touchdown.

Huddersfield replied through Neil Harmon and Craig Weston and the Giants continued where they had left off after the break.

Another Australian, Dean Hanger, took full advantage of an awful mix-up in the Warrington defence to touch down under the posts.

And Paul Loughlin's fourth successful kick of the afternoon opened up a commanding 24-6 lead for the basement side.

Substitute Paul Cook then capitalised on Vince Fawcett's terrible effort at the death to score a fifth Giants try and in the end Schofield's men were full value for their victory.

The final hooter signalled mass celebrations as Huddersfield were finally rid of the unwanted tag of the only professional rugby league side not to win a game this season.

St Helens 18 Leeds 31

Leeds maintained their 100% start to Super League III with a superb victory at Knowsley Road.

The Rhinos, who have now won their first eight league games this season, trailed early on after Anthony Sullivan crossed, but hit back with tries from Francis Cummins, Brad Godden and Andy Hay.

However, Chris Joynt touched down eight minutes before the break to give Saints hope of ending the visitors' proud record.

Then Karle Hammond went over to draw them level at the start of the second half.

But Leeds showed their class as Daryl Powell regained the lead with a dive over the line.

St Helens tried to rally again but Leeds played out to victory.

Hull 16 Wigan 38

Wigan were 18-4 up by half-time and never really allowed Hull back into the game despite their second half improvement.

Tries for Moore (2), Connolly, Cowie, Haughton and Robinson plus 14 points from Andy Farrell's boot gave Wigan a win which takes them level at the top with Leeds.

However the Yorkshire club have still to play their 8th game and they have the chance to open up a two point gap again when they play at St Helen's.

Salford 8 Castleford 18

Castleford's recent poor form had seen them drift towards the wrong end of the table but it was reversed at the Willows.

Tries from Ford, Mather and Mills were added to by three successful kicks from Jamie Benn.
