Soldiers killed in battle with Tamil Tigers

Defence Ministry officials in Sri Lanka say eighteen soldiers have been killed in the latest battles over control of the main highway linking the Jaffna peninsula with the rest of the country through territory held by the Tamil Tiger guerrillas.

The Tigers said they killed more than fifty government troops.

The bodies of nine soldiers killed in recent fighting have been handed back to the Sri Lankan army through the International Red Cross.
