(Close): Dow industrial stocks staged a final-hour rally to end three days of losses as investors sought out bargain stocks whose prices had sunk.
US investors are worried that Japan's recession will erode the profitability of US corporations with interests there
* US producer prices rose 0.2% in May with the core ex-food and energy rate also up 0.2%. Analysts had forecast increases of 0.1% for both measures.
Business inventories in April rose 0.2% after a revised 0.6% rise previously.
