Saturday, May 30, 1998 Published at 15:38 GMT 16:38 UK Sport: Football Real penalty halved Fans caused mayhem at the game European football's governing body has halved the $200,000 fine it imposed on Real Madrid for crowd trouble at the first leg of the European Cup semi-final against Borussia Dortmund. But the hefty 1,000,000 Swiss francs ($674,000) penalty for apparently letting in too many fans will remain. UEFA's decision was described by the Spanish soccer federation on Saturday as "unacceptable." A spokesman said it would campaign on behalf of the club when the UEFA executive committee meets in Paris on June 9. Real Madrid President Lorenzo Sanz called the outcome "unjust and arbitrary in the extreme." UEFA imposed the punishments following crowd problems at the Santaigo Bernabeu stadium on April 1. Hooligans damaged one of the goals, causing a 75-minute delay. Dispute over crowd size In a press statement, UEFA said it was keeping the 1,000,000 Swiss francs which represented the "pecuniary benefit gained by the club for violation of the UEFA provisions governing the number of spectators admitted to the stadium." Real have asked UEFA how they were able to calculate the crowd was about 20,000 higher than allowed. Club lawyer Juan Antonio Samper insisted last month Real had only sold the permitted number of tickets. A two-match ban on the stadium has been cut to one. Real must play their first home European game next season over 300 kms away from Madrid. Seville or Valencia are possible alternatives. |
