The French National Assembly has voted to tighten the country's existing restrictions on the private ownership of firearms.
The new legislation, which has still to be approved by the Senate, bans the purchase or possession of firearms or ammunition without official approval.
The bill was proposed by a socialist deputy and backed by the assembly's leftist majority, but opposed by conservatives.
Ownership of handguns was already largely banned in France under a decree passed in 1995.
