Reports from Uganda say the government has banned aspirants to the presidency from campaigning in the election until they have been formally nominated to stand. Ugandan radio quoted a statement by the minister for internal affairs, Brigadier Moses Ali, saying police had been directed to deal with anyone violating the ban. The chairman of the electoral commission, Haji Aziz Kasujja, is due to hold a press conference on Monday to outline the programme for presidential elections. Among those who have declared their intention to stand are a former mayor of Kampala, Al Hajj Nasser Ntege Sebaggala, and a previous presidential candidate,Muhammad Kibirige Mayanja.
