Protests at Azeri vote fraud

Thousands of opposition supporters in Azerbaijan have staged protests over this month's parliamentary elections, which international observers said were marked by widespread fraud.

Up to fifteen thousand people marched through the centre of the capital, Baku, calling for the resignation of President Haydar Aliyev whose New Azerbaijan party won an overwhelming majority.

There were also protests in several provincial towns - and in the western city of Sheki there were violent clashes between police and demonstrators. Opposition leaders accuse President Aliyev, who's 77, of trying to ensure the succession for his son, Ilham Aliyev.
