Palestinians appeal for calm |

| The United Nations Security Council has asked the UN secretary general, Kofi Annan, to explore what sort of international observer mission might be acceptable to both sides. The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, says he is doing all can to stop gunmen shooting at Israeli targets from territories fully controlled by the Palestinian Authority. But the Israeli Prime Minister, Ehud Barak, has replied that words are not enough. The BBC's Chris Morris reports: |
