Chirac calls on Israel to withdraw from Lebanon and Golan Heights

President Chirac of France -- continuing his visit to Lebanon -- has called on Israel to withdraw from the zone it occupies in the south of the country, and from the Golan Heights, seized from Syria in the 1967 war.

President Chirac said Israel must understand that her people would not know security if there was no peace.

At the same time, Israel itself had the right to complete security.

Israel has offered to leave southern Lebanon if it receives guarantees that cross-border attacks into Israel will stop.

Lebanon has said any withdrawal must be immediate and unconditional.
