Tense stand-off at Kinshasa university
Police and troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo have surrounded the campus at the University of Kinshasa in a tense stand-off with students. The trouble began when ten students were arrested on Thursday night -- they were later released, but students said they had been beaten up and had to be taken to hospital. Angry students began a protest but troops prevented them from leaving the campus -- they then sang songs and denounced President Kabila. A group of journalists covering the confrontation were later stopped by police and had their notes and recordings confiscated. A BBC correspondent in Kinshasa says it's not clear why the ten students were initially arrested, but arbitrary action by police is quite common. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
