Tense stand-off at Kinshasa university

Police and troops in the Democratic Republic of Congo have surrounded the campus at the University of Kinshasa in a tense stand-off with students.

The trouble began when ten students were arrested on Thursday night -- they were later released, but students said they had been beaten up and had to be taken to hospital.

Angry students began a protest but troops prevented them from leaving the campus -- they then sang songs and denounced President Kabila. A group of journalists covering the confrontation were later stopped by police and had their notes and recordings confiscated.

A BBC correspondent in Kinshasa says it's not clear why the ten students were initially arrested, but arbitrary action by police is quite common.
