Arafat urges halt to Palestinian fire
The Palestinian leader, Yasser Arafat, has said he is doing everything he can to stop gunmen shooting at Israeli targets inside territory controlled by the Palestinian authority. Correspondents say that Mr Arafat's remarks are a rare public call to reduce the level of Israeli-Palestinian violence that left more than two hundred people dead over the past seven weeks. Overnight two Palestinian police officers were killed in a fierce gun battle with Israeli forces in the West Bank town of Jericho. The BBC's Hilary Andersson reports:
