Boy convicted of raping five-year-old

A 12-year-old boy has been found guilty of raping a five-year-old girl in a Leeds cemetery.

The schoolboy held his head in his hands and sobbed as the jury at Leeds Crown Court convicted him of raping the girl when she went out to play with him and her 12-year-old uncle. The girl's uncle, who is now aged 13, had previously admitted indecent assault.

BBC correspondent Tim Smith says both boys have been placed on the sexual offenders register
The jury had heard that the girl kicked and screamed as she was attacked in a quiet corner of a Hairhill cemetery on September 14 last year.

Nicholas Campbell, prosecuting, had said the 12-year-old raped the girl the first time.

He said the boy then threatened her uncle that he would burn his clothes on a fire they had made if he did not have sex with the girl as well. The 12-year-old raped her for a second time, Mr Campbell said.

The girl's uncle, giving evidence for the prosecution, admitted he got on top of the girl when he was threatened, but he denied he had full sex with her.

In a video-taped interview with police the girl described how she tried to fight the 12-year-old off.

"I was saying, 'Get off me, get off me', and I was kicking my legs at him. But he wouldn't get off," she said.

She said that the 12-year-old hurt her and laughed as he raped her and she thought her attackers were going to kill her.

The girl's grandmother told the court that after playing with the boys, the girl had told her that one of the boy had shown her "what daddies do to mummies."

She said she had called the police after the girl told her the boy had hurt her "down below."

Both defendants have been released on bail and will be sentenced after reports have been prepared.

The boys, who are both from Leeds, have now been placed on the sexual offenders register.
