Relatives of two French victims of the human form of "mad cow disease", or BSE, are suing the French and British governments and the European Commission. A lawyer, acting jointly for a teenager suffering from new-variant Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease and a 36-year-old man who died from the disease last February, has filed a suit in a Paris civil court.

The wrangling over the US presidential election continues but the critical point is being reached. A Florida judge is preparing to rule on whether recounted ballots should be included in the official declaration of who has won the state - and therefore the White House.

The last bodies have been recovered from the site of the Austrian ski train fire, the country's worst-ever peacetime disaster. A total of 155 bodies have been pulled from the charred remains of the mountain train, which was destroyed in a tunnel inferno near the ski resort of Kaprun.
