Family massacre in Assam

At least six members of the same family have been shot dead by gunmen in the north-eastern Indian state of Assam.

Several other family members were injured in the attack in a village Bihubara near the border with Nagaland.

The Assam Chief of Police, H K Deka, told the BBC that the attack was carried out by a group of armed men who broke into the house of a trader and opened fire indiscriminately.

No one has admitted responsibility for the attack, but Mr Deka says the banned separatist rebel group, the United Liberation Front of Assam, ULFA, has been active in the area.

However ULFA has denied involvement in similar killings in Assam in recent months.
