Sheikh Hasina attacks Bangladesh judiciary

The prime minister of Bangladesh, Sheikh Hasina, has strongly criticised the country's judiciary for granting bail to a newspaper editor charged with sedition.

Addressing parliament, Sheikh Hasina asked why a High Court bench had thought it necessary to sit at midnight and grant bail to the editor, A.M.M.Bahauddin.

Government officials filed charges against Mr Bahauddin after he published a parody of the national anthem in his right-wing paper, Inkuilab.

A BBC correspondent in Dhaka say Sheikh Hasina's comments come amid controversy over the independence and accountability of the judiciary.
