Sri Lankan fighting kills up to thirty

Sri Lankan officials say that five soldiers have been killed and about twenty-five Tamil Tiger guerrillas either killed or severely injured in fighting in the north.

The Sri Lankan defence ministry said that the army and Tamil Tiger rebels exchanged artillery fire near the town of Mankulam -- the last rebel held town on the main route to the Jaffna peninsula.

The army has been trying to open the road, for more than a year.
