Japan gives multi-million dollar grant to Burma

Japan has agreed to give Burma a grant worth more than fourteen million dollars for debt relief and another worth about five-and-a-half million dollars to assist in food production.

Government officials said the main grant will help Burma to reduce the two-point eight billion dollars it owes Japan in official development aid.

Japan resumed providing aid to Burma in March, ending a ten year suspension in protest against the military government's refusal to recognise the election victory of the National League for Democracy.
