UN diamond experts in India
A team of United Nations experts is in the Indian capital Delhi to investigate whether diamonds from conflict zones like Sierra Leone are finding their way to India. The UN team, which has already visited twenty countries, was set up in response to international concerns about diamonds being traded illegally to fund civil wars in Africa. India is one of the world's largest centres for processing and polishing diamonds -- nearly one million people are employed in the diamond industry. Indian companies say they have already taken extra measures to ensure so-called blood diamonds don't get into India. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
