UN security council to promote peace and development in Africa

The United Nations Security Council has agreed to set up a working group to promote peace and development in Africa.

The group will consider wide- ranging proposals drawn up by the UN Secretary-General, Kofi Annan, aimed at encouraging African stability and growth.

Last April, Mr Annan said African leaders must show the political will to combat corruption, protect human rights and pursue sound economic policies.

In return, he said, the international community must respond by investing in Africa and by intervening to stop armed confilcts.

The working group will meet for six months to consider the UN Secretary-General's proposals.

A ministerial-level meeting aimed at reviewing progress will then be held every two years.
