LA police trial
Three police officers have been found guilty of conspiracy in the first trial to come out of a major corruption scandal to hit the Los Angeles police force. A fourth officer was acquitted. The Rampart scandal, as it was known, took its name from the police station in a gangland area of the city where the officers were based. The trial stemmed from the admission of a disgraced former officer who accused colleagues of planting evidence, shooting suspects and lying under oath. As a result, more than a hundred criminal cases were thrown out and convictions quashed. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
