Kenya's local brew deaths now 50
It's now known that more than sixty people have died in the Kenyan capital Nairobi, after drinking an illegal alcoholic brew known as Chang'aa. More than one hundred others are being treated in hospital: some have gone blind. Chang'aa is much cheaper than other alcoholic drinks, and is popular in slum districts. Initial analysis suggests that methanol may have been added to the drink to make it more potent. Twelve women have been arrested for selling it. From the newsroom of the BBC World Service |
