The United Nations Security Council has expressed grave concern over the situation in the breakaway Georgian region of Abkhazia, where thousands of people have fled their homes after days of fighting between separatists and Georgian militiamen.

The Council called on both sides to honour the peace deals they have signed.

Latest reports from the border area of Gali suggest that the fighting has subsided, and efforts are being made to allow people to return to their homes.
